The Simple Dollar’s New Financed Car

by Debt Destroyer on March 30, 2009

Not too long ago I wrote a post asking whether PF blog readers were looking for perfection or honesty? Just from the few comments I received it seems readers say they value honesty more than perfection. Which is good news for us bloggers because it’s a lot easier to be honest than perfect. We got to see this same question answered on a larger scale when Trent @ The Simple Dollar wrote about buying a new car, a 2009 Prius. And while quite a few comments admired Trent’s honesty it looks like a lot more were expecting perfection. Knowing that [...]

by The Happy Rock on March 29, 2009

The following is a guest post written by Barbara Waltz one of the founders of 247QuoteUs.com, an online resource blog and insurance quote comparison guide. Rising health insurance costs make it important for individuals and families to reduce the amount spent on coverage. Some people feel that the situation is out of their control. However, here are several tips to lower health insurance premiums. Tip No. 1 — Choose a Health Insurance Policy Customized for Your Needs Many health insurance policies give you options that you simply do not need. While it might make you feel more secure to have [...]

Spring Break! 10 Movies For Ten Bucks

by Debt Destroyer on March 24, 2009

SPRING BREAK!!! Here in South Dakota the State Universities go on Spring Break in March.   It usually doesn’t feel like spring quite yet, in fact we had a winter storm in the middle of it (should’ve used the Pearl Jam money on a snowblower). But it was nice to have some free time. I had grand plans before the break as to what I’d accomplish.  Organize the basement, work on my taxes, and finish up a couple of video projects that I’ve been putting off.  But really the only thing I got done was taking ten movies off of [...]

Grandma, Please Stop Spoiling Our Children

by Debt Destroyer on March 19, 2009

Grandparents are great aren’t they? I don’t know about you, but I have very fond memories of my grandparents.  There’s the trips to the zoo, baseball games, & museums.  I remember having lots of sleepovers with great food and a never ending supply of cookies.  But above all I remember lots and lots of treats and toys. I see that same pattern repeating itself for my children and their grandparents.  And that is wonderful, but… Our house is full of the crap that the grandparents give their “precious little angles”. For example, at the end of January my son turned [...]

Have you been to a library lately? For those of you who were scared off by the Dewey Decimal System, it’s time for a visit.  You might not recognize the place. The card catalog is long gone, it’s been replaced with banks of computers.  The scary looking reference section has been transformed into the video section.    The hard wooden tables and chairs have been replaced with soft comfy furniture. It’s a whole new world. I have to admit I missed the transformation.  It wasn’t until I had kids that I decided to see what the library had to offer me.  And boy am I ever glad [...]

Below is a post describing a fun frugal experience from my childhood written by The Happy Boulderette(The Happy Rock’s Mom).  The story itself is neat, but what makes it even more interesting is the striking similarity it has to a post that I wrote about Teaching The Happy Pebble about the value of a dollar.  It is great to see that lessons learned as a child are still bearing fruit almost 30 years later.   You can change your family tree. The Happy Boulderette has 2$ in her pocket and the local carnival is set up in the supermarket parking lot [...]

Help Wanted – Cobblers Needed During A Recession

by Debt Destroyer on March 12, 2009

Last November I made a post about how I decided to save some money by not replacing my shoes. Well as my luck would have it, I instantly broke the thingie-ma-bobber which holds the shoe laces in.  So over the holiday break I took my shoe in to the shop in town that fixes shoes.  They said they’d call me when they were done. A month went by and I’ve heard nothing. So I stopped in today just to check-up up on how things were going (I really needed my shoes). They were done! The clerk apologized for not calling, [...]

I mentioned last year that against my frugal intuition I shelled out the big bucks to hire a CPA to do my taxes.  I wanted to follow that post up and share my insight after another year of experience and knowledge to answer the question is it worth getting a CPA to do your taxes.  Here are six reasons you should consider hiring a good Certified Public Accountant: Your taxes are somewhat complicated. Complicated can mean any of the following: extra income from say blogging or contracting, investments, child care expenses during work hours, mortgages or refinancing, energy efficient home [...]
