Frugal Summer Treat – Homemade Popsicles

child-popsicle.jpgThat is right, you can make your own freeze pops.  Our 2 year old son absolutely loves this and we don’t mind giving him one or even two a day because we control the ingredients.  The Rockette and I even enjoy the ice cold refreshment on a hot summer day.

All you need is a popsicle container and some fruit juice.  You can usually purchase a cheap version at the dollar store or you local super store, but I would recommend something like Tovolo Rocket Pops on Amazon.  We are still using the cheap ones because they are smaller, but these have several advantages.  First, since you usually have to run them under water to get the popsicle out, it is much easier to do with one pop rather than a tray of six or eight. Second, you can fill and replace on at a time which makes keeping them in stock much easier. Third, dishwasher safe.

Just fill the container with 100% fruit juice, put the handle, and let them freeze.  The no drip handles work pretty well too.

With our smaller pops that only take about an ounce of juice we can make about 50 popsicles for the price of one box of 6-12.  Very nice savings and it is much healthier too.

Other than 100% juice here are a few other great ideas for pops that I have seen:

  1. Add a little sparkling water for kick
  2. Puree real fruit
  3. Yogurt smoothy pops
  4. Pudding
  5. Add small chunks of fruit

Enjoy the sool summer treat!
