40 Acres And A Mule – Free Land Still Available In The United States
Ever dreamed of packing up and moving away from your hectic stressful life for the peaceful, rural, prairie beauty of the Midwest? Here is a great oppurtunity for you: some places in the US will actually give you free land, if you move to their town. That’s right, free.
This dated article from CNN Money chronicles one family’s move from Las Vegas to Kansas, where they were given free land to build a house. Some places will even provide monetary credits for each member of your family.
Here is a little flavor of how it works in Ellsworth, Kansas :
In Ellsworth County, for example, there are 23 lots available for free to individuals, assuming they’re pre-qualified to build a house that is at least 1,000 square feet and agree to build a house on the land within two years time.
In addition to the land, families with children stand to receive $1,500 to $3,000 toward a down payment when they buy in the area. “Each new child is worth an additional $6,000 to our school district from the state,” said Anita Hoffhines, executive director of Ellsworth County Economic Development.
Here are some free land opportunities in Kansas. There are similar incentives in North Dakota, although as the site says that the “odds are, you are not a candidate for NW North Dakota.”. You need a portable job, financial security, and a solid moral fiber to qualify. The North Dakota site was written by some good marketers, because just reading through it gets my mind thinking through the possibilities. The article also shares that towns are willing to work deals with new business owners that plan to bring economic value to the area.
Living on the east coast, I would have never thought that the Midwest was so desperate for new residents. I have been to and through most of the northern US states and they are astonishingly beautiful, although if you are used to suburban/city living there isn’t much of anything there. In Wyoming it could be 200 miles between gas stations! It is still quite fun to dream!
You missed the point Alan. Can’t help you if you don’t recognize that what your article wishes for destroys itself.
Jon, sorry its not my article. The ‘free’ land being discussed here are not vast open tracts of land, but little 1/4 acre plots in little towns on which you can build your little box. The open land you speak of is still there and is NOT open to public purchase. The 320 acres which you can get for ‘free’ is undeveloped, has irrigation and development stipulations, and will cost you a bundle to develop. By the sound of it, you are ‘free’ to live on a reservation in which you may share! On the other hand, most of the interested people here do not have that privilege or option!
I live in ND, and you don’t want to live here. For one thing, the winters get to 60 degrees below zero. Metal breaks easier in that kind of cold. You need a car for anything. There is no walking here when it’s like that, and the distances are greater between things like home and work. For another thing, there’s nothing here. The only things to do are drink and go to church. The leadership likes it that way, because it makes their job simpler. It also means that the state is very conservative.
Right now we have people coming here for the oil jobs, so there’s no housing available. The landlords rent for $2000 a month on a shitty 2 bedroom and get it. The rig workers can pay it, and that’s whose money they want. Everything is expensive, because everything has to be brought in. The wages for every other job besides the oil rigs are low, because the local bigwigs keep it that way. Most of them own businesses and want to keep underpaying their workers. I had one job for a city council member that paid $8 for tech support. ND is like America’s India for outsourcing. They keep unions down to keep wages down.
The best advice I can give you is to make the best of it where you are and try to save a little. Coming here won’t solve anybody’s problems and might even make them worse.
Sounds like hell
I spent a winter here for the oil boom in 2005, he’s not lying theres nothing to do there except work and make allot of money if your in the oil field. Otherwise your going to work doing crap jobs making less than dirt. This little town when I was there preyed on us oil workers. Now that gas is up again it might put boom town back to business, it died down why I left, but now that oil is up it also might be back to business with oil jobs. If thats so, then housing will be expensive again. But when oil guys are making 10k month you don’t really feel 2k month for rent. So it works for the oil workers but its hell to work in 60 below 0, first place I seen where it doesn’t snow much, but every morning the ground is frozen solid with ice, and so is your car it freezes outside and inside your windows. So expect lots of accidents and cars not running if they don’t have engine heaters! Thats the way it as when I was there in the winter. The summers are way better.
I live in Texas and this sounds like something to look into. I am currently unemployed and decent paying jobs are kinda scarce! It is a crying shame that you cannot just be anymore! You have to contribute to the system or sleep on the streets and get harrassed by cops. I don’t mind work at all:) When I was working I was a very hard worker. I just don’t like that even if you “own” land, if you don’t pay your taxes they can take it from you and sell it to someone else? That is just renting..you pay your rent you can stay? We as Americans are blinded to fact that we are not free anymore. The Feds are trying to make it illegal for you to grow your own food. You cannot lead a simple life anymore. If I had a chance to “unplug from the system” I would in a heartbeat! I will look into this. I just want to be left alone to live my life as simply as possible.
There is no longer “free land” in the US. The plains were originally opend to settlers and cattle ranchers in the late 1880s but laws have changed as per the Bureau of Land Magement in 1976. See quote:
“No matter what you may have heard or read, there is no such thing as “free land from the government.” There is no federal homesteading program and any public land the government does sell is sold only at fair market value.
Under the Federal Land Policy and Management Act of 1976 (FLMPA), the federal government took over ownership of public lands and abolished all remaining traces of the often-amended Homestead Act of 1862.”
Visit the website: No Free or Cheap Government Land
Plug that title in your web browser or even just put in Free Land in US and you can read it. Sorry…:)
Visit this site. Not like I’m about to build a house in Kansas. but you can understand their thinking. City gives you a $1500 home lot. You build a house using a local builder. Put your kid in school there and they get $6000 from the state for the school district. Good idea.

do you get the mineral rights?
Hello everyone… my suggestion is everyone on here pool theyre resoures ideas and abilities and all go for one huge area together XD. Anyway if i could even just purchase one acre of land for 500.00 and pitch a tent i would be happy. I am almost homeless and am a female and let’s say “ageless” grrr lol i have always dreamed of the wide open spaces also. I would be willing to pitch in where i am needed. Any suggestions?
If you are wanting to go in on some property, or maybe an off grid community, I’d like to be involved. The industrialized world is not for me. As a veteran, I have had enough of uncle Sam running my life and I just want to grow my own food, hunt, live simply.
Melanie…have you found what you are looking for?. I’m a Charismatic Christian 68yr
old female..don’t let the grass grow under my feet..My daughter says I’m like Peter Pan
and will never grow-up..I’m growing a garden and have a small greenhouse..plus other
toys I use(mantis tiller, shovels, hoes, etc) training my own Blue Heeler pup for a live doorbell, plus protection…..I live in Arkansas..and looking for property that would
suite a off grid lifestyle…look’n for like mind people…
Having grown up in the midwest, I lived in Bismarck, ND for a little while and then moved to Minnesota and finally Wisconsin. I can verify that the winters here are not for everyone. They can come on early in October, stay through April, and bring brutal cold, heavy snow and ice, and literally dangerous windchills. In ND, the open, flat land in much of the state amplifies the cold and wind aspect. There’s not a lot in the way of water or trees, for that matter, in much of the Eastern half of the state which is downright shocking to many outsiders. Western half has a little more varied praire and rolling terrain and is really beautiful in my opinion. I don’t know if these small towns carry as much of the “Midwest Nice” persona that was ingrained in me from growing up in Wisconsin – my last visit to small towns in ND had me treated as an outsider – I wonder if that is the pervasive attitude in many of these small towns seeking to attract young families. If so, it’s just not going to work. There’s so much that a small family already has to overcome and deal with if they move there – the weather, the isolation and long distance to familiar amenities (restaurants, shopping malls, etc.), etc. Not feeling like they are welcome will certainly be the nail in the proverbial coffin for any of these initiatives.
ya you know free is good when one dont have money to buy land and how hard is it to build a home and why think about nabors if they good or bad be couse you have that were ever you goo so be think full for something when offerd becouse it not your land it not mine land it GOD land nothing more love the land as you love life build homes and be happy do what is right with in life and dont worry GOD will take care of you inshallah
Reminds of the house I bought on 3 acres in the woods 5 years ago surrounded by a family of related rednecks on the whole street. 5 years later I walked away from the house, mowers stloen, weedwackers, broken mailboxes, drunken neighbors throwing wrenches which broke a window……yea sometimes and almost always the grass is never greener……..Day 1 the house was nice beautiful yard…..goes to show…
That was what they wanted. They wanted you to walk away. It was partly their lack of civilized culture, and partly a way they could make money. I would have opted for trained dobermans named after Greek Gods, electric fence & razor wire, video cameras & alarms, a sentry gate & gard tower platform, my own loud stereo, old school spalding golf clubs with plenty of balls, HAM radios & lightning rod towers, trucks with headers, chicken & goats, militia training & mobilization meetings in the yard, hosting every boyscout troop in the area, and sooooo much more. You could have even hosted barbaques to benifit the local police, fire statioin, and politicians. Even more, what about hosting a bed and breakfast camping retreat for Vets with serious PTSD? A placethat they couldget away for a while. What about hosting an alternative lifestyles or biker gang pick nick. The question is if you know how to truly have fun with it all and make friends who are “more impressive” than the rednecks who were giving you a hard time. With enough of that, those who were harassing you would leave.
I am a veteran with severe PTSD. He could have left his house for a weeks vacation, taken my meds with him, and let me “house sit” a while. Redneck issue solved. It’s hard to be scared off by humans when you’ve hunted them before.
GOD BLESS YOU…

Great comment, why not just party with them? figure out what is considered fun or “PC” there? would love to get away from the beaten path…
I like this one. Years later, however, a great reply.
Dave, sorry to hear that happen to you , I was wondering where was this happen, in what state/city?
may I ask where this was or do you stil live ther
I think it’s interesting that people are still writing comments on here. I’ve been following these posts for years.
hahahaha I busted out laughing at that comment. Following these posts for YEARS! Damn that’s an energizer bunny thread if i ever did see
I am trying to leave tge city for my children and my sake and fanily
It’s almost over…The harvest is….
Nicw! This sounds worth investigating further. I heard of a similar offer long ago. SDA on July 11 is correct in the thinking to hold on to your dream over others’ pettiness and games. I grew up in a family of saboteurs, so you learn a few things about preservation and amusing harmless ways to self protect. A shot at freedom, expression and individuality on your own little piece of God’s handiwork seems worth the playful havoc given and endured. thanks, all the best to all!!
HI! I just remembered… if I am correct- Ellsworth is on the list of Ghost towns.. there was an industrial toxic leak of sorts that seeped into the water table years ago–EPA was involved- they sifted and re-dirted everything and let time try to heal the land. Worth checking..
i just wanted to be part of the history on this site… someday , years from now,, someone will see this, and know i was here… take care everyone,, have a great life.. the world is wonderful… victor bohy. palm springs, california, u.s.a
How can I get free Land and a House of Stability?
I need a farm our jobs r flexible I have horses n livestock looking for big house n barn please email if anyone wants out we can deal
i so agree with dave(above comment). me and my family werent even that far out in the state of MAINE and had the same problems as he had. alot of the backwoods mainer people are the same redneck style as he describes. but it is when they all have relatives and friends all around them that they tend to ‘take over’ things in the neighborhood. making them the boss, so to speak, of their area and by running u out, it keeps “their kind of people” in their area only. no outsiders. as time went on and the education system was enforced, things changed. old farts died or had to go to homes, their children learned the computer age, and not as many people wanted the isolated life that most backwoods bring. the land remains the same but life moves on. its nice to have PEACE
I’ve been dreaming of this senario for years, and maybe once my daughter is out of College, I could do it. I do have a portable job, but no financial security yet, and absolutely not high on the moral fiber list.
With a little land i could make money
seriously need help i want out of this corrupt festering cess-pool thats called society need a wee bit land to build my own little cabin to grow some food work and nourish the land also raise some dogs so come on poeple nobody can say that they are proud to be part of a society that thinks its more important to wash a car than give a dying child a FREE drink if yous would all wake up we could start a new society where the real things matter not what shop has a good sale on i will get of my soapbox now and wait to see if there is any real poeple let on this rock :») D.M.C

roger youre a dumbass.
anybody know of what states besides kansas and alaska offering homesteading property??????
I like your question
Mime is the same
was wondering if anyone could tell me where you can obtain free land. i have been watching a tv show called mountain men where people live on free land with no power or water basically off the grid. would appreciate any help i could get. thank you.
I’m a vet as well , I’m an ex navy seal from team six in early to mid eighties and I’m like
most vets that went through very dramatic missions of hunting people as a job and I was very well trained by the best.I have severe ptsd but I contain it well. I’ve only come across a few idiots that even after me warning them and trying to avoid any confritations had to try me but after seriously hospitalizing 4 at once most people keep away from me so I have few people who will talk to me, which is not what I wanted . I’ve tried very, very hard to forget what happened there and pray to God to forgive me for what we had to do in the mid east and other places most people never even heard of. So I’m used to being alone and can survive in nearly any situation. So rednecks don’t scare me ,I’ve seen an done more horrifiying things than they can even imagine in there self centered pea brains. I try to avoid confritations but will defend myself in a way I hope no one will force me to have to do. I’m a peaceful minded person which is hard after what I’ve been through which I can’t and will not tell due to my traing and conditioning. But I would love to be able to homestead on a nice peace of property and build a cabin with my own two hands as God has given me many talents that I would love to share with the right people . I’m good at building with wood ,metal ,I enjoy doing artwork and any chalange that the good Lord feels that I need or to help someone else learn and hopefully without violence. Sincerely Charles Brennon
MAY GOD BLESS YOU ALL ,and pray for me and my ex team members for Gods forgiveness and peace of mind Amen.
Good luck brother!
Hi, I need you and I am female.
You’re mistaken about the ‘Redneck’ label. They’re not rednecks but, gypsies. These gypsies move into an area and push people out with their antics so that they’re left alone. They’ve taken over townships in Virginia. They’re recluse, undocumented and dangerous petty criminals. Law enforcement in towns and counties know exactly who they are but, leave them along on account that the Federal government keeps an eye on their activity.
Am poor Pakistani.I have no land. I have wife three daughters.my educstion is b.a. i widh to migrste usa
if you find a plot that’s not inhabited, and you go put your stuff on it and keep it there for 5 years and pay the property taxes every year, it’s yours. i suggest a fence or maybe a pole in the ground with a dog tied to it to keep your stuff safe. a 12 gauge wouldnt hurt either. unless ya have to use it. then it could hurt a lil bit. but they shoulda seen your stuff there and known it wasnt theirs. then they might not have gotten shot.
but yea.
squatters rights are gonna be the way this country moves forward now.
coincidentally, i been to amsterdam a few times. did yall know that nearly everybody that lives in that city is squatting? damn near every single person. they got more bikes in that city than they got people as well. so nobody locks up their bikes over there. you just go out the door and you hop on whichever bike is closest to you and if youre smart you make sure that you got someone to watch your stuff while your gone or ya could get squatted on i suppose. but i repeat myself.
I’m interested in the land how do I get qualified?
Hi, the whole thing is going well here and ofcourse every one is sharing information, that’s actually excellent, keep up writing.
I have been trying to get a place out in the middle of nowhere with a few horses a garden and some other live stock. I just want a place that if I wanna fish I can do it if I wanna go shooting I can do it or just go for a walk or a ride on a horse. The people in the city or town can go about there business and leave me alone. I live in a small apartment complex in Kansas and I have gotten harassed because I have guns I go to a range and shoot I have to have a car backed up to my front door when I want to goto the range and shoot. I just wanna find a place to move to with a fair sized cabin where I can enjoy life.

Nothing is free. You’ll pay for it one way or the other. Be it frigid weather, boredom, or isolation. There’s always a price to pay.
I am like thee. how can we become we? can you hear my plea? underground can you see we can gather together underground. we meet here we can meet there. one place in view another out of site like picking cherry’s one at a time. a rock must roll for a long time to gain its girth we have to take our time for what it’s worth. They’re watching listening even smelling us all the time. If we use our blinker they’ll never let the light change so that we can go. Sshhhh……
If anyone is interested in starting an off grid community, email me at qscpenniman@gmail.com
The problem is people are so conditioned (brain washed) they believe this is the best country anywhere….. Lots of people in this country have been sleep walking their whole lives……Like George Carlin use to say. ” The reason they can it the American dream, is you have to be asleep to believe it…..”
It has also been said, ” none are more hopelessly enslaved than those that falsely believe they are free “. Our first job is to become fully awake, then help all those we can to wipe the sleep away and stand against the ever growing possibility of self destruction on a planetary scale.
.
I know this is an old site but with a search with Publishers Clearinghouse, I just found it. Nothing in ThIS life is fre— especially our so called “ freedomsâ€! They ALL come with a high price. This is NOT the 1700’s anymore & this country is about to it’s breaking point. If people don’t stop being allowed to come here & we continue to take away every living creature’s habitat- HUMANITY will have NO HABITAT to live in& it will be time to take off for planets unknown & start messing up other areas in the universe . That seems to have become humans M O. We have bad people settling here when this country started signing all the legal documents for this country & the corruption came with them. NOW, we have corporations that basically tell Congress what they want& how much that Congressman will ad to his bank account & that’s all it takes . Greed has officially become the everyday action . All of us have NO say & it doesn’t pay to vote — they have FINALLY given up the ghost on the rigged elections. All you are doing is voting one crook over another. I don’t blame Trump for not coming clean on his taxes— it’s nobody’s business — just because it’s a tradition— doesn’t mean one HAS to tell anyone anything! I think Congress is just jealous THEY haven’t gotten smart enough or make enough to put in to that pot. They get all their living expenses, travel expenses, food & the perks of their job— for free— at the taxpayers expense.if you to get “freebies†here— you have to be from a foreign country we will set you up- house , car, license – & you don’t have to learn the language OR follow our laws! And WE can do that in THEIR country as well! I had a cousin who married a man from Syria & they went to Africa for a short time & she told me that happened with them. A lot of foreign countries have a lot cheaper lifestyle than here — but they all want to come here & bring us down from the inside. And— to David Peterson who wrote on Sept. 1, 2017 @ 5 something in the morning — if you read this I would like to talk to you personally about your statement . I am working on something ( don’t worry! It’s legal!! Lol) but would like to discuss it in length Thanks!
If you’re surprised it because you don’t know history. Amerikkka has been giving away land to white men since the Homestead Act of 1862!
There is certainly a lot to learn about this topic.
I love all the points you’ve made.
